Providence College Men’s Track And Field Claims Four-First Place Finishes At URI Invitational
The Friars swept the top-four positions in the 3000 meter run.

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College men’s track and field team competed at the URI Sorlien Invitational on Jan. 18. The Friars saw four-first places complimented by four-second place finishes.

Sophomore Austin King (Kempton, Pa.) claimed second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.22. Freshman James Campbel (Cumberland, Maine) also claimed a second place finish at the meet with a time of 1:07.26 in the 500 meter dash.

Sophomore Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) captured first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.14. Graduate student Kevin Cooper (Waterford, Ireland) joined Vercollone in the winner’s circle with an IC4A Championship qualifying time of 2:27.85 in the 1000 meter run.

Providence took positions one and two in the one mile run with a first place finish from sophomore Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) and a second place finish from graduate student Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.). Dixon finished the race in a time of 4:20.07, while Saad finished on the heels of Dixon with a time of 4:20.46.

In the 3000 meter run, the Friars claimed the top-four spots. Providence was led by junior Benjamin Connor (Derby, England), who finished first with a personal-best time of 8:22.52. Connor was followed by classmate Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) and sophomores Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.) and Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.). Hillery was second with a time of 8:23.82, while Robertson and Costello captured third (8:35.90) and fourth (8:37.95), respectively. Connor and Hillery both posted IC4A qualifying times, while Costello captured a personal-best.

The Friars also captured third in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 3:26.22.

The Friars are back in action Friday, Jan. 24, when they compete at the Boston University Terrier Invitational. The meet is set to start at 12:00 p.m.
