PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s cross country team was named the Words Unlimited Team of the Year (Jan. 2). Along with capturing Team of the Year honors, Head Coach Ray Treacy earned Words Unlimited Coach of the Year and senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) was named Female Athlete of the Year.

The 2013 women’s cross country squad captured the school’s second team NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship Title on Nov. 23. The Friars won with a combined score of 141 points, 56 points less than Arizona (197), the second-place finisher.

Seniors Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) and Sisson, and sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), as well as freshman Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) all scored for the Friars en route to capturing the NCAA Title. Sisson, Nagel and Collins all earned All-America accolades for their top-40 performances.

Providence captured seven team wins over the course of the 2013 season, including its first BIG EAST Championship (Nov. 2) since 2006. The Friars went on to win the Northeast Regional Championships (Nov.15) for the second consecutive season, before capturing the NCAA Title.

Providence also had Sisson earn the BIG EAST individual title with a course record time of 19:49. World Cross-Country Champion Lynn Jennings previously held the course record with a time of 20:26 set in 1992. Sisson and Nagel combined for four BIG EAST weekly honors over the course of the season. Sisson was also named the National Athlete of the Week (Nov. 4) during the season.

Sisson was the Friars’ top-finisher in six of the seven races she competed in, including a second-place finish at the Northeast Regional Championships in addition to her BIG EAST Championship and All-American performance at nationals.

Treacy was named USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year (Nov. 26), Northeast Women’s Coach of the Year (Nov. 19) and his staff earned BIG EAST Women’s Coaching Staff of the Year (Nov. 2). This is Treay’s third time being recognized as Words Unlimited Coach of the Year (1991 and 1995).

Treacy has been one of the nation’s most successful coaches, in 30 seasons, coaching 59 All-Americans, who have combined for 162 All-America accolades. He also has coached 13 NCAA Individual Champions in cross country and track, 44 BIG EAST Individual Champions and 11 Olympians. In addition, his teams have captured two NCAA Cross Country Championships, 13 NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships, 21 BIG EAST Cross Country Titles and 20 New England Championships.
