Collins Leads Providence Women's Track At BIG EAST Championships

Sarah Mary Collins took first in the 10,000 meter run for first BIG EAST Individual Championship.



VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College women's track and field team began competition at the BIG EAST Championships today (May 10) in Villanova, Pa. The Friars were led by sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), who captured the BIG EAST title in the 10,000 meter run. Five Friars also ran personal-best performances on the day.



Collins led the pack with a time of 33:36.36, an ECAC Championship qualifying time, for her first BIG EAST Individual Championship. Collins was followed by graduate student Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) and senior Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.), who finished fourth and sixth, respectively. Both Roecker (35.21.53) and Murphy (35.26.23) ran ECAC Championship qualifying times with personal-best performances.



In the 3000 meter steeplechase, freshman Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) captured fourth with an ECAC Championship qualifying time of 10:48.13.



Sophomore Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) qualified for the 800 meter finals, to take place tomorrow. Keating posted an ECAC qualifying time of 2:08.76 to earn a spot in the finals.



Juniors Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.) and Kelsey Dermondy (Norton, Mass.) each ran personal-best performances in the 400 meter dash, while senior Meredith Daly (Ashland, Mass.) captured a personal-record in the 200 meter dash.



Providence finished the day in fourth place with 23 points overall. The Friars will wrap-up action at the BIG EAST Championships tomorrow (May 11).
