Providence Men’s And Women’s Track Wraps Up Competition At The BIG EAST Championships
Phil Reid placed second, shattering the school record, in his first ever heptathlon.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track teams finished competing on the second and final day of the 2015 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Armory in the Bronx, N.Y. on Mar. 1.

Senior Phil Reid (Oceanport, N.J.) highlighted the day with a second-place finish, shattering the Providence College school record, in his first ever heptathlon. Reid finished with 4,323 points after completing seven events over the past two days. Reid also finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.88), while freshman Brian Zied (Ramsey, N.J.) was right behind him in sixth-place (8.98).

Also finishing second for the men was junior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) in the mile. Oakley finished with a 55 second last lap and an official time of 4:11.13, one second behind the winner.

Seniors Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) and Brian Doyle (Swansea, Mass.) completed a tough distance double with a sixth (8:22.58) and eighth-place (8:26.20) finish, respectively, in the 3,000 meters.

On the women’s side, senior Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) began the morning with a personal best and seventh-place finish in the mile (4:58.44), shortly followed by fellow classmate Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkill, N.Y.) grabbing eighth place in the 1,000 meters (2:55.00).

Taylor Corder (Corinth, Mass.) had an impressive run in the 500 meters after finishing fourth. Corder recorded an ECAC qualifying time and personal best of 1:15.84.

The women weren’t done there. Senior Caitlin Abelseth (Voorheesville, Mass.) stepped on the track for the 800 meters to finish seventh, also running a personal best (2:13.44).

In the 3,000 meters, graduate-student Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) finished fourth in a time of 9:09.16, while freshmen Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) and Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) finished sixth (9:27.54) and eighth (9:31.34), respectively. Ilarda’s finishing time also was a personal best.

The relays were the final events on the track. The Providence women, Kohlbrenner, Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.), Pryor and Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.), finished sixth in the 4x800 meter relay (9:16.48), while the men’s 4x800 meter relay team, including juniors Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) and Kevin Olsen (Marlboro, N.J.), Oakley and sophomore James Campbell (Cumberland, Maine), placed fifth (7:48.48). Also in the relay events, the women’s 4x400 meter relay team, including seniors Kelsey Dermody (Norton, Mass.), Caroline Callaghan (Rochester, N.H.), Abelseth and Corder, placed fourth in a time of 3:55.54.

At the conclusion of the meet, graduate-student Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) was named the Women’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete of the championship for her NCAA record breaking performance in the 5,000 meters on day one (Feb. 28). Sisson broke former Friar Kim Smith’s collegiate record, posting a time of 15:12.22 to defend her BIG EAST title.

Over the weekend, the Friars recorded 14 personal best performances, 10 on the women’s side and four on the men’s side, to finish seventh (53 points) and sixth (52 points), respectively, as a team.

The Friars will be back in action at the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championships on Mar. 7-8.
