PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's track team wrapped up competition at the 2015 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship today (Saturday, May 9). The Providence women finished the meet with 62 points for sixth-place, while the men also placed sixth as a team with 53 points.

Graduate student Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) highlighted the day, winning her seventh career BIG EAST title in the 5,000 meters. Sisson controlled the race from start to finish, breaking her own meet record with a time of 15:40.64. Sisson also was named the Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete of the meet for her performance. Providence women were unchallenged in the 5,000 meters as freshman Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) placed second, 34-seconds ahead of third-place in a time of 16:41.59.

Senior Phil Reid (Oceanport, N.J.) competed in the decathlon, placing second and scoring eight points for the men's team. Reid was fighting for first place with Villanova's Robert Cacace with the last event (1,500 meters) to go. Reid won the 1,500 meters, but Cacace was not far enough behind Reid, who eventually took the title. The New Jersey product also won the decathlon high jump, scoring 813 the most for any decathlete in one event over the weekend. After 10 events, Reid tallied 5,835 total points in the competition.

Also in the multi-events, freshman Paige Santos (Rochester, Mass.) finished up the heptathlon, collecting 3,089 points for fifth place.

Sophomore Brian Zied (Ramsey, N.J.) picked up five points for the men between the 400-meter and 110-meter hurdles. Zied finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles. For the women in the hurdles, junior Allesandra Foresti (Vietri sul Mare, Italy) placed seventh, collecting two points.

With temperatures in the 80's and the sun beating down on the men in the 5,000 meters, freshman Tom O'Neill (Middletown, N.J.) finished sixth for the Friars, while Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) grabbed one point for the men, finishing eighth.

The excitement of the Championship was undoubtedly the relays. In front of a raucous crowd at Jumbo Elliot Track, the women's 4x800 meter relay team consisting of seniors Caitlin Abelseth (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss.), junior Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) and graduate student Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) placed second. The women were in contention for a podium finish the entire race, eventually breaking the outdoor track school record by nearly eight seconds (8:42.24).

Immediately following the women's 4x800 meter relay, the men stepped onto the track for their own 8-lap relay. A bit of the magic the women had conjured was captured by Juniors Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) and Joe Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.), sophomore James Campbell (Cumberland, Maine) and freshman Andrew Doherty (Taunton, Mass.) as the men held on to secure second place. The men were within one second of a school 4x800 meter relay record with a time of 7:30.87.

Vercollone, sophomore Tom O'Hare (Dumfries, Va.), junior Kevin Olsen (Marlboro, N.J.) and senior Anthony O'Malley (New York, N.Y.) finished up the meet in the 4x400 meter relay. It came down to the last lap for the men. With 250 meters to go, in his final race as a Friar, O'Malley switched gears and overtook the Xavier runner for fourth-place.

The Friars are back in action next week at the IC4A/ECAC Championships on May 15-17 in Princeton, N.J.
