Providence Men’s And Women’s Track Complete Day One Of BIG EAST Outdoor Championship
Phil Reid leads the decathlon after day one of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship.


PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track team completed day one of competition at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship, hosted by Villanova, yesterday (Friday, May 8).

Senior Phil Reid (Oceanport, N.J.) kicked off competition in the morning with the decathlon. After five events (100 meters, shotput, high jump, long jump, 400 meters) Reid led the field by 150 points (3,242), ahead of Villanova’s Robert Cacace. Reid collected personal bests in three of the five events, including the 100 meters, shotput and 400 meters. He will compete in the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meters today to conclude the 10-event competition.

Also in the multi-events, freshman Paige Santos (Rochester, Mass.) finished day one - four of seven events - in the heptathlon. Santos is currently in fifth place with 2,024 points.

To begin the running events, sophomore Emily Bushey (Vernon, N.J.) qualified for the 1,500 meter final after grabbing an automatic top-4 spot and personal-best 4:27.96.

Following the 1,500-meter heats, the 400-meter runners were up. Senior Kelsey Dermody (Norton, Mass.) posted her first sub-59 performance (58.88) in the women’s 400-meter heats, while sophomore James Campbell (Cumberland, Maine) and sophomore Tom O’Hare (Dumfries, Va.) also recorded a personals best, crossing the line in the men’s 400-meter heats in times of 50.23 and 50.95, respectively.

Later in the evening, freshman Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) placed second in her second ever 3,000 meter steeplechase. Ilarda finished with a time of 10:41.68, earning eight points for the Friars. Senior Caile Kohlbrenner (Sparkill, N.Y.) and sophomore Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) also scored for Providence, finishing fourth and seventh, respectively.

In the 10,000 meters, graduate-student Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) secured third-place in an NCAA East Regional qualifying time of 34:33.15. Freshman Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) also joined Nagel for her debut at the distance, picking up one point for the Friars with an eighth-place finish.

To cap off the evening, the 10,000 meter men collected 17 points for Providence. Senior Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) placed second (30:05.52), while sophomore Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and senior Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) finished fourth (30:24.51) and fifth (30:43.66), respectively.

Today’s multi-events will begin at 10:00 a.m. for the men and 10:30 a.m. for the women, while the running events are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. The BIG EAST Digital Network will continue to provide live coverage of the championships.
