Sisson Advances To NCAA Championship Breaking Her Own Hodges Stadium Record
Emily Sisson qualifies for NCAA Championship with fastest 5,000 meter qualifying time in the East region.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The remaining four Friars competed on the final day of competition at the NCAA East First Round today (Saturday, May 30), each in the 5,000 meter heats.

Graduate-student Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) was first up on the track, along with freshman Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) in heat one of the 5,000 meters. Sisson and Iona's Kate Avery went straight to the front, taking turns at the lead every 800 meters. As soon as Sisson hit the last lap, she overtook the Gael to win the race in 15:40.31. With that time, Sisson qualified as the fastest in the East Region for the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore. on June 10-13, as well as breaking the Hodges Stadium women's 5,000 meter record which was her own from 2012.

Lembo concluded her stellar freshman year with a 14th-place finish (26th overall) in the same heat as Sisson. She crossed the line in a time of 16:40.31.

Directly after the women's 5,000, senior Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) took to the track in the first of two men's 5,000 meter heats. Quinn ran an aggressive race and was with the top pack of eight runners for the majority of the race. With one mile to go in the race, the pace quickened with Quinn holding onto ninth-place, 23rd overall.

Sophomore Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) was up next in the second heat. Under the bright lights of the NCAA First Round at Hodges Stadium, Crawley grabbed 21st-place (37th overall).
