Providence Men’s And Women’s Cross Country Win At UNH
Junior All-American Catarina Rocha and sophomore Thomas O’Neill both won individually in Durham, N.H.

DURHAM, N.H. – The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams both captured their first wins of the season today (Sept. 5). The women recorded a total of 16 points, with the first five Friars across the line in the top-6 spots, while the men swept the top-5 spots to win the meet with just 15 points.

For the women’s 5k race, a pack of five Friars, including junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), seniors Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) and Sarah Collins (Basil, Switzerland), and sophomores Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) and Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.), led the way around the course in the opening laps. With 2km to go, Rocha pushed the pace to give herself a gap between her and the pack and never looked back. Rocha crossed the finish in a time of 17:28.49 for the win.

Sitting behind Rocha were the trio of Collins, Ilarda and Mullins, respectively. Mullins found her form and kicked passed the other two Friars for second (17:32.06). Ilarda and Collins battled to the finish, crossing the line in third (17:33.64) and fourth (17:33.90), respectively.

Lembo wasn’t too far behind Ilarda and Collins, finishing in sixth-place in a time of 17:41.59.

Rounding out the top-7, junior Emily Bushey (Vernon, N.J.) and Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) crossed the line in 11th (18:42.94) and 17th (19:27.69), respectively.

On the men’s side, the Friars also had a pack of five leading the charge for the majority of the race. Coming through the 3km mark, senior Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.), juniors Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland), and sophomores Thomas O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.) and Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) still remained in the pack.

With the group heading into the woods for the final 2km, O’Neill gapped the rest of the field and won the race for the second-straight year (15:29.07). Hanlon was the next Friar across the line in 2nd-place, just 12 seconds behind O’Neill (15:41.59).

Shortly after Hanlon, Armstrong, Crawley and Robertson ran side-by-side to the finish line. Crawley ended up third (15:45.05), Robertson took fourth (15:45.06) and Armstrong took fifth (15:45.09).

Rounding out the top-7 for the men, freshman Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) finished as Providence’s sixth runner in 10th-place (16:07.48), while senior Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) grabbed 11th (16:13.78).

“Today was an excellent start to the season,” said head coach Ray Treacy. “We have a lot to work with and are excited for the season ahead.”

The Friars will be back in action on Saturday, September 12 at the Nassaney Invitational, hosted by Bryant.
