Providence College Men’s And Women’s Cross Country Ready For Nassaney Invitational
The women’s race is set to go off at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 12), while the men will begin at 11:15 a.m.

Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the Nassaney Invitational in Smithfield, R.I. this Saturday. Both teams are coming off of wins at the UNH Tri-Meet that took place on Sept. 5.

On the women’s side, the same squad that grabbed five of the top-6 spots in Durham, N.H. last weekend will return to run the 5km course at Bryant. Leading the Friars will be junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.). Rocha won the UNH Tri-Meet in a time of 17:28.49.

Joining Rocha will be co-captain senior Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.), senior Sarah Collins (Basil, Switzerland), and sophomores Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) and Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.). Mullins grabbed second place last weekend in a time of 17:32.06 with a strong finish, while Ilarda and Collins fought for third (17:33.64) and fourth (17:33.90), respectively. Lembo finished in sixth-place (17:41.59) to round out the top-5 for Providence.

Junior Emily Bushey (Vernon, N.J.) will also compete for the Friars after her 11th-place finish at UNH. Joining her will be senior Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) for her season debut. Keating has cracked the Friars top-7 at the NCAA Championships the past three years and also will look to score.

The men also will return their top-5 finishers from UNH. Leading the charge for Providence will be BIG EAST Athlete of the Week (Sept. 9) sophomore Thomas O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.). O’Neill captured the UNH Tri-Meet individual title for the second-straight year after crossing the line 12-seconds ahead of teammate Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland), who will also race this weekend, in a time of 15:29.07.

In addition to O’Neill and Hanlon, senior Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.), and juniors Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, Country Mayo, Ireland) will also compete for the Friars. Crawley, Robertson and Armstrong finished side-by-side in the race to collect third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.

The men also will add senior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) for his season debut. Last year, Oakley captured Second Team All-America accolades during the indoor track season in the mile after finishing up a strong cross country season.

Freshman Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) and senior Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) will also compete for the Friars, looking for that top-7 spot.

The women’s race will begin at 10:30 a.m., while the men are scheduled for an 11:15 a.m. start. For live updates, follow @FriarsXCTrack on Twitter.
