Providence Men’s and Women’s Track Compete At Colonial Relays and Stanford Invite
Hugh Armstrong shines at Stanford Invite with a 39-second personal best in the 10,000 meters.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men’s and women’s track teams sent student-athletes to both the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va. and the Stanford Invitational in California this week.

Last night on the West Coast, sophomore Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) posted a personal best in section three of the 5,000 meters for 14th (16:19.67). Fellow classmate Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) also competed in the same race, finishing 16th in a time of 16:25.26.

Junior Catarina Rocha clocked in at 33:40.30 for eighth-place in the second section of the 10,000 meters for her debut at the event. Rocha’s debut marked the fifth-best 10,000 meter all-time at Providence College.


Graduate-students Jordan Mann (St. Louis, Mo.) and Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) each competed in the men’s 5,000 meters. Mann finished with a time of 13:56.02 for 12th in section one, while Quinn finished 12th in section three of the men’s 5,000  meters (14:12.31).


To cap off the evening, junior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) ran a huge 39-second personal best in section two of the men’s 10,000 meters with a time of 29:16.73. Hugh’s performance marked the seventh-best 10,000 meters in the history of the men’s program.


Last night in Virginia, sophomore Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) dipped under 17 minutes (16:59.34) for the first time in the women’s 5,000 meters for eighth place.


On the men’s side, seniors Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and Harvey Dixon (Gibraltar, Gibraltar) finished eighth (3:48.67) and ninth (3:49.40), respectively, in the 1,500 meters, while freshman Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) earned 15th-place in a time of 3:52.44.

In the 5,000 meters, junior Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.), sophomore Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) and senior Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) all finished among the top-20 in the field. Crawley finished 11th in a time of 14:29.14, while Hanlon placed 16th (14:40.55) and Costello finished 19th (14:42.36).

The men’s relay teams also had a good showing today (April 2). The 4x800 meter relay team, including Carleo, senior Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.), junior James Campbell (Cumberland, Maine) and freshman Michael O’Leary (Melville, N.Y.) finished a close second (7:33.92) behind Columbia (7:33.24). Later in the day, the 4x1500 meter squad, including Oakley, Dixon, Crawley and freshman Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) took to the track to place second (15:45.35) behind Iona (15:45.22).

The Friars will return to action on April 15 when they host day one of the Ocean State Invitational at the Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
