Providence Men’s and Women’s Track Combine For Four Penn Relays Titles
Brianna Ilarda, Catarina Rocha, Sarah Collins and Liam Hillery each captured Penn Relays Titles last night (April 28) in Philadelphia, Pa.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men’s and women’s track teams had a successful showing at the 122nd Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. last night (April 28). The team’s tallied four titles in the distance events at the conclusion of the evening.

Sophomore Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) was the first to get the ball rolling in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. She clocked in at 10:04.77, just shy of her personal best from two weeks ago, to take home the title. Junior Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) competed directly after Ilarda in section two of the steeplechase. Hollowood finished second in her heat, ninth overall, in a time of 10:41.98, which marked the second-fastest steeplechase for the Friar.

Junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) asserted their dominance in the 3000 meters. After the first few laps, Lembo took to the front to string the pack out, with Rocha following. The two worked together over the latter portion of the race, while Rocha kicked home for the win (9:32.94). Lembo clocked in at 9:36.75 for second-place.

The men then took to the track in the 5,000 meters. Junior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) finished 12th in a time of 14:11.03, while classmate Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) was right behind him in 16th (14:15.11).

Senior Sarah Collins (Basel, Switzerland) did not mess around when it came to her turn in the 10,000 meters. Collins went straight to the front, developed a sizeable lead for herself and never looked back. She came home to win the title in a time of 34:03.07. Sophomore Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) also featured in the race. Barry improved her personal best in the event by 47 seconds after finishing 10th in a time of 35:31.20.

To cap off the night, the men’s 10,000 meter runners stepped onto the track. Graduate-student Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) ran away with the title after posting a 29-second personal best time of 29:22.38. Teammate Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) also competed in the 10,000 meters. Hanlon clocked in at 30:06.29 for ninth-place.

The Friars will wrap up at Penn Relays today with the men’s distance medley relay scheduled to start at 2:35 p.m.
