Former Friar Julian Matthews Competes in Olympic 1,500 meters
Matthews finished ninth in the first heat of the 1,500 meters.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Former Providence College track and cross country standout Julian Matthews<http://www.friars.com/sports/m-track/mtt/julian_matthews_459856.html> '13 competed for New Zealand in the opening heats of the Olympic 1,500 meters in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 16th. Matthews competed in the first of three heats along with the 2008 Olympic 1,500-meter champion and multiple national record holders. Matthews finished ninth in the heat with only a mere 1.43 seconds separating first from ninth spot. With only the top five being guaranteed a spot in the semifinals, Matthews had to wait for the final two heats to finish. In the end, Matthews was the first person out of the semifinals, missing the cut by .36 seconds.



As a Friar, Matthews was a three-time All-American. He earned two All-America honors in the indoor mile (2011, 2013) and one All-America accolade in the outdoor 1,500 meters (2011). Over his four years at Providence College he won two BIG EAST titles, one for the indoor 1,000 meters in 2013, and one as a member of the distance medley team that captured the BIG EAST Indoor Championship in 2012.
