Providence College Men’s And Women’s Track Teams Set To Compete At BIG EAST Indoor Championships
The Friars will travel to Ocean Breeze Park in Staten Island, N.Y. for the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Feb. 26 and 27.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track teams will travel to Ocean Breeze Park in Staten Island, N.Y. to compete at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Feb. 27 and 28. Friar Women To Look Out For
The Friar women look to have a strong showing in the distance events with the top-six student-athletes from the fourth-place 2015 cross country team competing across multiple races. Seniors Sarah Collins (Basel, Switzerland) and Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) will compete in the 5,000 meters, set to take place on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Collins currently ranks sixth in the nation in the 5,000 meters with her 15:45.58 performance from December.

Junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) will take to the track in the 3,000 meters on Saturday at 12:50 p.m. Rocha and Lembo both raced to personal bests in the 3,000 meters earlier this season at the BU Terrier Invitational on Jan. 29, posting 9:24.89 and 9:28.10, respectively.

Sophomore Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) will compete in the mile for Providence, with the final taking place on Saturday morning at 10:10 a.m.

Senior Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) will feature in the 1,000 meters.  The finals scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. start on Saturday.

Women’s 2015 Championship Recap
Last year at the BIG EAST Championships, the women’s team captured a seventh-place finish (53 points). Highlighting the weekend was Emily Sisson, who on the way to breaking the meet record and capturing another BIG EAST title, broke former Friar Kim Smith’s ’04 NCAA Indoor 5,000 meter record (5:12.22). In that same race, Lauren Mullins earned a second-place finish. Additionally, the distance medley relay team had a good showing, finishing second in its event.

Friar Men To Look For
Like the women, the men will also look to show strength in the distance events. The three Irishmen, graduate-student Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland), junior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, Country Mayo, Ireland), sophomore Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland), as well as graduate-student Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) will compete in the 5,000 meters on Friday at 2:50 p.m.

Graduate-student Jordan Mann (St. Louis, Mo.) will step onto the track in the 3,000 meters on Saturday at 1:10 p.m. Mann has had a standout season with the Friars, thus far, running two sub-8 minute 3,000 meters (7:58.72 and 7:57.30), as well as a sub-14 minute 5,000 meters (13:53.29)

Senior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) will race in the mile after posting his second sub- four minute mile performance (3:58.34) at the 109th NYRR Millrose Games last weekend (Feb. 20). The final will take place on Saturday at 10:20 a.m.

In the 1,000 meters, senior Harvey Dixon (Gibraltar, Gibraltar) and freshman Michael O’Leary (Melville, N.Y.) will compete for the Friars. The heats are scheduled for an 11:45 a.m. start, with the finals on the following day at 10:30 a.m.

Senior Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) will feature in the 800 meters this weekend. The heats are scheduled for 1:45 p.m. on Friday, followed by the finals at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday.

Sophomore Brian Zied (Ramsey, N.J.), who placed sixth last year in the 60-meter hurdles, will look to improve on his performance in that same event. The trials for the hurdles are set for a 12:10 p.m. start on Friday, with the finals taking place on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.

Additionally, in the field events, sophomore John Olayiwola (New Britain, Conn.) will look to score for the Friars in the triple jump on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Men’s 2015 Championship Recap
The 2015 Providence College men’s track team finished sixth at the Armory for the BIG EAST Indoor Championship with 52 points. The team had three runner-up finishes, including Julian Oakley in the mile, Shane Quinn in the 5,000 meters, and Phil Reid in the heptathlon.
