Providence College Men’s And Women’s Track Dominate Distance Events At URI
The Friars came away with individual wins from both the men and women in events from the 800 meters and up.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track teams competed at the Sorlien Memorial Invitational on January 15 in Kingston, R.I. The squads came away with individual wins in the 800 meters, 1,000 meters, mile and 3,000 meters on both sides, as well as the men’s 4x800 meter medley relay.

On the men’s side, seniors Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) and Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) took the title in the middle distance events. Vercollone clocked in at 1:55.71 in the 800 meters while Oakley cruised to the finish in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:28.47.

Graduate-student Jordan Mann (St. Louis, Mo.) collected his first win as a Friar in the mile as he crossed the line in 4:12.89, while sophomore Thomas O’Neill captured the 3,000 meter title in a time of 8:29.24.

Mann and Oakley then returned with senior Harvey Dixon (Gibraltar, Gibraltar) and sophomore Andrew Doherty (Taunton, Mass.) to win the 4x800 meter relay in a time of 7:56.42.

On the women’s side, graduate-student Devyn Pryor (Dartmouth, Mass.) ran 2:20.92 in the 800 to come away with the win, while junior Emily Bushey (Vernon, N.J.) captured first place in the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:54.62.

Competing for the first time after the cross country season also was sophomore Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) and junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.). Each came away with wins in the mile (4:56.68) and 3,000 meters (9:49.57), respectively.

Next up, the Friars will travel to Boston, Mass. to compete at the Terrier Invitational on January 29th and 30th.
