Catarina Rocha Crowned BIG EAST 5,000-Meter Champion
Catarina Rocha earned her first BIG EAST Individual title in the 5,000 meters on the second and final day of the 2016 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championship.

GENEVA, Ohio - The Providence College men's and women's track teams wrapped up competition today at the 2016 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio.

Junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) highlighted the afternoon after she captured her first BIG EAST Individual title in the women's 5,000 meters. Rocha clocked in at 16:20.32, five seconds ahead of second-place. Senior Sarah Collins (Basel, Switzerland) also competed in the race, finishing third in a time of 16:26.41.

Also on the women's side, the 4x100 meter relay team, including Helen Bayers, Paige Santos, Allesandra Foresti and Lillian Smith, placed sixth to pick up points for Providence, as did the 4x400 meter relay team (Molly Keating, Bayers, Angelica Kartsounis and Foresti) with an eighth place finish in the event. Additionally, the women's 4x800 meter relay team, which was made up of Keating, Katie Lembo, Emily Bushey and Keelin Hollowood, placed seventh.

On the field, Santos finished sixth in the high jump with a leap of 1.55 meters to add to the Friars' tally. The women finished the meet in sixth place with a total of 48 points.

On the men's side, senior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and freshman Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 1,500 meters.

In the 5,000 meters, junior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) captured fourth-place, while graduate-student Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) and sophomore Aaron Hanlon finished sixth and eighth, respectively.

Sophomore Brian Zied (Glen Rock, N.J.) collected points for Providence in the 110 meter hurdles, with a fifth place finish (15.82), and in the 400 meter hurdles after he placed seventh in a time of 57.67.

For the men in the relays, the 4x100 meter relay team (Zied, John Olayiwola, Stephen Farr and Joseph Hurton) picked up sixth-place. The 4x400 meter relay team, including James Campbell, Michael O'Leary, Andrew Doherty and Carleo, finished seventh, while the 4x800 meter relay team, which was made up of Harvey Dixon, Jordan Mann, Oakley and Joseph Vercollone, captured a third-place finish in a time of 7:40.27.

The men's team finished the meet with a total of 48 points for seventh-place.

All-in-all, the Friars picked up seven top-3 finishes, including two BIG EAST Individual titles at this years' BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Additionally, nine Providence College student-athletes earned All-BIG EAST honors after finishing in the top-3 in their respective events.

The Friars will return to action at the NCAA First Round in Jacksonville, Fla. on May 26-27.
