Brianna Ilarda and Jordan Mann Advance To NCAA Track & Field Championships
Brianna Ilarda and Jordan Mann both advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this evening.

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Providence College men's and women's track teams competed at the NCAA First Round the past two days (May 26 and 27) in Jacksonville, Fla.

To kick-off of the afternoon on Thursday, senior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) advanced to the quarterfinal of the 1,500 meters. Oakley placed fifth in this heat to advance automatically. He will return to the track at 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 28 to compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. on June 8-11.

Later that evening, the 10,000 meter runners stepped onto the track, with the women starting first. Senior Sarah Collins (Basel, Switzerland) finished 19th after taking a bad fall midway through the race. Junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) also competed in the 10,000 meters, finishing 33rd.

On the men's side, junior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) captured 16th-place in the 10,000 meters, while graduate-student Liam Hillary (Smithfield, R.I.) finished his collegiate career with an 18th-place finish.

Sophomore Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) then competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this evening (May 27). Ilarda finished fourth in the second of three heats and advanced on time (10:00.12) to the 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinals at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. on June 9 at 5:02 p.m.

To cap off the night, graduate-student Jordan Mann (St. Louis, Mo.) competed in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Mann finished third in a personal-best 8:38.28 to automatically advance to the 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinal in Eugene on June 8 at 5:02 p.m.

The Friars will return to the track tomorrow for the third and final day of the NCAA First Round, with Oakley in the men's 1,500 meters, sophomore Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) in the women's 5,000 meters and junior Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) in the men's 5,000 meters.
