Providence Cross Country Competes At The Joe Piane Invitational
The Friars finished first in the women’s race and fourth in the men’s race.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Providence College men’s and women’s Cross Country teams competed at the Joe Piane Invitational on Sept. 30 in South Bend, Ind. The Friars finished first in the women’s race and fourth in the men’s race.
In the women’s race, Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) led the Friars by finishing in ninth place with a time of 16:37.8. The pack of Amelia Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va.), Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) and Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) ran close together throughout the race. Paldino finished 24th with a time of 16:48.8 followed by Ilarda in 26th (16:49.0), Wheeler in 28th (16:51.6) and Lembo in 30th (16:54.0). Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) continually moved up throughout the race, finishing 70th place (17:23.0) for her season debut. Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) finished 80th (17:29.2) and Keelin Hollowood finished 107th (17:48.4) to round out the scoring for Providence. The Friars scored 117 points to win the meet, defeating No. 2 New Mexico and No. 5 NC State. There was only a 16 seconds spread between Collins from Lembo. “I’m very happy we were able to win the meet after a terrible start,” Coach Ray Treacy said.  “They (the women) stayed composed and got the job done.”
In the men’s race, the Friars finished fourth overall and were led by Julian Oakley’s (Tauranga, New Zealand) 22nd place finish (24:08). Trevor Crawley (Cumberland R.I.) finished 29th (24:13) followed by Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) in 32nd (24:17), Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) in 38th (24:21) and Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.) in 61st (24:36).  Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) and Michael O’Leary (Melville, N.Y.) finished 96th (24:53) and 120th (25:08), respectively, to round out the scoring for Providence.  As a team, the Friars were in ninth place for much of the race but the men ran a strong last two miles to move up and finish forth. The top five all moved up in placement from the 5k mark to the finish. Oakley moved up from 25th to 22nd, Crawley moved from 30th to 29th, Armstrong moved from 42nd to 32nd, Hanlon moved up from 43rd to 38th and Robertson moved up from 98th to 61st. The Friars had only 27 seconds separating the first and fifth runner. In finishing fourth, Providence took down No. 23 NC State, No. 30 Florida State and No. 30 Texas, along with multiple teams that received votes in the latest USTFCCCA poll. Treacy had high praise for the men’s team. Treacy said it was a “great result for the guys, finishing 4th and beating a lot of ranked teams.”

The Friars’ next race will be the New England Championships on Oct. 8 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
