Providence Men’s And Women’s Cross Country Ranked Nationally
The Friar women remain first while the men moved up to 24th in the nation.

Providence, R.I.- The USTFCCCA released their latest national rankings on Oct. 4. The latest poll saw the women’s team receive more first place votes and extend their lead in the rankings. The poll also saw the men’s team jump back into the national rankings after taking down multiple ranked teams at the Joe Piane Invitational.

This past weekend saw the Providence women earn a convincing win at the Joe Piane Invitational. Despite a poor start, the women tallied 117 points and defeated former No. 2 New Mexico and No. 5 NC State. The Friars had a 16.2 second spread from its first place finisher (ninth place) to its fifth place finisher (30th place).

In response to the Friars performance, the coaches rewarded Providence by awarding the team ten first place votes. Providence now has a commanding lead in the national polls, as the Friars lead Colorado by ten points (357 to 347).

The Providence men also competed at the Joe Piane Invitational. Entering the weekend, the Friars were receiving votes but were no longer in the top 30. Based on the previous national rankings, Providence was projected to finish eighth at the Joe Piane Invitational. The men vastly outperformed these projections by finishing fourth as a team and taking down then-No. 23 NC State, then-No. 24 Washington State, and Texas and Florida State who were tied at then-No. 30. After their strong performance, the Providence men jumped to third in the Northeast Region and 24th in the nation.

The Friars will race a “B” team at the New England Championships on Oct. 8 before racing their top squad again at the Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 14.
