Providence Cross Country Ready For The Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational

The Friars will compete against top ranked teams on Oct. 14.

Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams return to action at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wis. on Oct. 14. The women’s 6k will start at 1:30 p.m. E.T. and the men’s 8k will start at 2:20 p.m. E.T.

Both teams are coming off of the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, which saw the women finish first and the men finish fourth in their respective races. The women won the meet with 117 points and an impressive 16 second spread between their first and fifth runner. The men’s fourth-place finish came at the expense of multiple higher ranked teams and was highlighted by a 27 second spread between their first and fifth runner.

The Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational will be one of the deepest races of the season as the fields will feature 19 ranked men’s teams and 17 ranked women’s teams. The No. 1 Providence women highlight the start list along with No. 3 NC State, No. 4 Washington, No. 6 Michigan State, and No. 10 Boise State. The men’s race will feature No. 1 Northern Arizona, No. 2 Syracuse, No. 3 BYU, No. 7 Portland, and No. 8 Iona. The No. 24 Providence men are projected to finish 15th in the meet but will look to exceed expectations again.

The women finished fifth at last year’s race and look to achieve a higher finish this year. Providence will look to Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) to lead the team. Collins has found great success at the Wisconsin Invitational, finishing in the top 10 each of the past three times she has competed, including an eighth place finish in 2015. The Friars will also be counting on a strong performance by the pack of Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.), Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) and Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.). No more than five seconds have separated this group all season. Last season, Lembo finished 42nd, Ilarda finished 58th, and Paladino, running for West Virginia, finished 124th. Look for all three to make improvements this season. Wheeler will be making her Wisconsin debut.

Also competing for the Friars will be Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.), Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.), Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Samantha Jones (Randolph, N.J.). Last season, Mullins finished 31st and Barry finished 152nd at Wisconsin. Hollowood will be making her Wisconsin debut and is coming off of a 107th finish at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. The Nuttycombe Invitational will mark Jones’ Providence debut and will be her first cross country race since earning All-America honors at last years’ NCAA Cross Country Championships.

The men look to improve upon last year’s 15th place finish at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. A strong performance will help the men climb in the polls as well as earn points towards qualifying for the NCAA Championships.

Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) has led the Friars all season and looks to continue to do so by bettering his 45th place finish from last year’s meet. Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.), Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland), Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) and Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.) will also be competing for the Friars. Crawley has made great strides this season and looks to continue his momentum by improving upon his 133rd place finish from last season. Armstrong, Hanlon and Robertson all competed at last year’s edition of the meet, finishing 97th, 114th, and 176th respectively.

Sophomores Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) and Nicolas Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) will round out the top seven for Providence. This will mark both sophomores’ debut at Wisconsin. Karamanolis last finished 96th at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Carleo last competed at the Beantown Invitational, finishing 40th.
