Track Shines At Stanford Invitational and San Francisco Distance Carnival

The Friars had five athletes set personal bests.



STANFORD, CALIF. – The Providence College men’s and women’s Outdoor Track teams competed at the Stanford Invitational and the San Francisco Distance Carnival on March 31.



Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) highlighted the Stanford Invitational for the Friars.  Paladino, competing in the Invitational heat of the 1,500, positioned herself towards the front of the pack from the start. Paladino closed hard over the final 200 meters to finish second overall with a time of 4:14.76. The time was a seven second personal best for Paladino and currently stands as the fifth fastest time in the NCAA.



Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) was another bright spot for Providence. Ilarda competed in the Invitational heat of the 5,000 meters.  The group remained tightly packed for the majority of the race, with Ilarda positioned in third place. The race really picked up over with three laps to go when a group of four broke away from the rest of the pack. Ilarda was part of this breakaway group and ended up finishing fourth overall in a time of 15:46.9. The time was an outdoor personal best by 23 seconds. Ilarda’s time is currently the fifth fastest in the nation.



Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) also had a strong race in the third heat of the women’s 5,000 meters. Wheeler finished in time of 16:10.7, good for fifth in her heat, in her collegiate debut for the event. In the second section of the women’s 5,000 meters, Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) finished 19th with a time of 16:30.79. Both Wheeler’s and Lembo’s time should qualify them for the NCAA East Regional Meet.



Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) competed in the second heat of the men’s 10,000 meters for the Friars. Over the early parts of the race, Armstrong positioned himself within the top group. As the race progressed, Armstrong remained right on the back of the lead group. Armstrong ended up finishing 13th in the heat with a time of 29:23.29. Armstrong’s time should qualify him for the NCAA East Regional Meet.

Other Results:



Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) finished eighth in the Invitational heat of the men’s 1,500 with a time of 3:46.91. Oakley and others had their times and places affected when, with 600 meters to go, the pack collided with an official who stepped onto the track.



Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished ninth in the third heat of the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:40.58.



Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) finished eighth in the fourth heat of the men’s 5,000 meters with a time of 14:22.28.



At the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, Thomas O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.) and Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) competed in the men’s 10,000 meters. O’Neill finished 11th with a time of 29:57.23 while Hanlon finished 12th in a time of 30:00.24.
