Providence Track Races at the URI Coaches Invitational

The Friars had six athletes finish in the top three in their events.



KINGSTON, R.I. – The Providence College Track and Field teams competed at the URI Coaches Invitational on Saturday, February 4.



The Providence men began the day by sweeping the first three spots in the mile. Senior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland), dropping down to race his first mile since December of 2014, took the win. Armstrong took the lead just after the halfway point and never looked back, claiming the win in 4:17.20. Sophomores Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand)  and Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) finished second and third with times of 4:20.13 and 4:22.01, respectively.



Freshman Alexandra DeCicco (Holtsville, N.Y.) raced well in the 800 meters for the women. DeCicco finished fourth overall with a time of 2:19.84.



Senior James Campbell (Cumberland, Maine) moved up in distance to race in the 1,000 meters for only the second time in his career. Campbell raced patiently, moving through the field to claim second overall in a time of 2:31.00.



Senior Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), racing her first 1,000-meter race ever, pushed the pace early and ultimately finished in fifth place with a time of 3:00.64.



Junior Thomas O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.) and senior Jake Feinstein (Sandy Hook, Conn.) both had strong showings in the men’s 3,000 meters. O’Neill took the lead from the start of the race and never relinquished it, winning in a time of 8:33.53. O’Neill won the race by 12 seconds. Feinstein fought hard the second half of the race and finished third overall in a time of 8:48.08.



The Friars will compete next at the Boston University Terrier Invitational. The two-day meet will take place in Boston, Mass. on February 10th and 11th. The women will compete on Friday the 11th while the men will compete on Saturday the 12th.
