Providence Track and Field Competes at URI Sorlien Invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College men and women's track and field teams competed at the URI Sorlien Invitational on Jan. 21 at the University of Rhode Island. The men and women each won three events.

The women's day was highlighted by junior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) claiming victory in the 1,000 meter race. Paladino broke away early and put eight seconds between herself and second place in the decisive win. Paladino's time of 2:50.52 is a mere three seconds behind the school record of 2:47.37, which was set back in January of 1990 by Sinead Delahunty. Freshman Alexandra DeCicco (Holtsville, N.Y.) took second in the race with a time of 2:58.03.

The women also claimed a 1-2 finish in the mile. Freshman Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) and junior Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) separated themselves and worked together the entire race. Wheeler took the win with a time of 4:58.36 with Lembo right behind with 5:00.00.

Wheeler, Lembo and Paladino teamed up with senior Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) to take the win in the 4x800 meter relay. The team won the event with a time of 9:29.54, 16 seconds faster than second place (Quinnipiac 9:45.58).

The men also had a strong showing in the 1,000 meter race. Sophomore Nicolas Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) ran an impressive last lap to take the win with a time of 2:28. 09. Classmate Michael O'Leary (Melville, N.Y.) also finished strong to take second place in a time of 2:30.16.

Senior Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) took home the win in the mile. Crawley stayed behind the leaders for much of the race until taking control with 400 meters remaining. Crawley held on for the win with a time of 4:17.43.

Juniors Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) and Thomas O'Neill (Middletown, N.J.) finished first and second in the 3,000 meters. The two juniors gapped much of the field about halfway though the race and continued to push the pace through the end. Hanlon took first with a time of 8:32.98 while O'Neill finished second with a time of 8:37.40.
