Hugh Armstrong Announced As Winner Of 2016-17 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for Men’s Outdoor Track and Field.
The recent Friar graduate earned the honor for both his athletic and academic success.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference announced the winners of the 2016-17 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards on Wednesday, July 26. Providence College senior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) was announced as the winner of the Scholar-Athlete Sports Excellence Award for men’s outdoor track and field.



The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.



Armstrong is a member of both 2017 Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society and Pi Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honor society. A captain of the cross country/track and field team, Armstrong has twice qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships East Preliminary meet in the 10,000 meters and also was named the 2017 Providence College Male Athlete of the Year for Individual Sports.
