Former Friar Emily Sisson ’14 Qualifies For IAAF World Championships

Sisson qualified with a third place finish at the USATF Championships



SACRAMENTO, CALIF. – Former Providence College Track and Field standout Emily Sisson ’14 qualified for the IAAF World Championships in the 10,000 meters on Thursday, June 22. Sisson, racing on the first night of the United States Track and Field (USATF) Championships, finished third overall with a time of 31:25. By finishing within the top three, she automatically qualifies for the IAAF World Championships.



The USATF Championships are being held in Sacramento, Calif.  Due to extreme heat, the start time of the women’s 10,000 meters was pushed back until 12:30 a.m. ET. The pace was quick from the beginning, which resulted in breakaway pack of six athletes only one mile into the 6.2 mile affair. Sisson tucked herself into the middle of the lead pack and would remain there until the late stages of the race. As the race progressed, the breakaway pack of six eventually became a group of four women fighting for three qualifying spots. Sisson secured her spot with a strong kick for home over the final 600 meters. Molly Huddle, Sisson’s training partner and another Ray Treacy-coached athlete, won the race while Emily Infield claimed second.



Sisson is the first Friar to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in the 10,000 meters since 2009 when Friar great Kim Smith finished eighth.



The World Championships are set to be held in London, England on August 4-13.
