Former Friar Mark Carroll Named Director of Track and Field/Cross Country at Drake University

Carroll takes over the Drake program after spending the last eight years at Auburn University.

DES MOINES, IOWA – Drake University Athletic Director Sandy Hatfield Clubb announced the hiring of former Friar Mark Carroll ’95 as the Director of Track and Field/Cross Country on Tuesday, June 27. Carroll takes over the Bulldog program after having spent the last eight years as head Cross Country and assistant Track and Field coach at Auburn University.

In his eight-year tenure at Auburn, Carroll coached five All-Americans, two NCAA regional cross country champions, six Southeastern Conference Champions and 18 All-SEC honorees. He also mentored seven student-athletes that qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships and coached athletes that broke seven school records.

Carroll becomes the fifth former Providence student-athlete to become a Director of Cross Country/Track and Field program, joining Ray Treacy (Providence College), Mick Byrne (University of Wisconsin), Andy Ronan (Stony Brook University) and Sinead Delahunty Evans (Brandeis University).

Carroll was one of the most successful athletes in Friar history during his collegiate career at Providence. He was a six time All-American and won the 5,000 meters at the 1995 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. He twice finished in the top three at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, finishing second in 1995 and third in 1992. Carroll holds the Providence record in the outdoor 5,000 meters (13:13.94) and the outdoor 1,500 meters (3:36.52). He was inducted into the Providence Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.
