BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Providence College women’s cross country team won the NCAA Northeast Region title on Friday, Nov. 10. The title is the women’s third straight and their fifth title in the past six years. The women earned an automatic qualification for the NCAA Cross Country Championships by winning the region. The men finished 12th as team.

WOMEN’S RACE:

With strong winds and the temperature dipping below 30 degrees, the race promised to be a slower, tactical race. At the mile mark, less than a second separated the top 30 women. Providence’s Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va.) and Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) were all within this lead group.

A group of eight athletes broke away from the field over the course of the second mile. Rocha, Ilarda, and Paladino were all a part of this group. Wheeler was one of the leaders of the chase pack. It was at the halfway point in the race that the Friars took control of the team standings.

The Friars continued their strong running over the final 3,000 meters. Rocha finished fourth overall to be first across the line for Providence. She was then followed by Ilarda in sixth, Paladino in 11th and Wheeler in 15th. For finishing in the top 25, all four earned All-Region honors.

Providence’s win was sealed by Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.). Over the course of the race, Barry moved up 18 spots to finish in 48th place.

Providence won the team title with 84 points, 31 points ahead of second place Dartmouth.

MEN’S RACE:

The men’s race began similarly to the women’s race as two seconds separated the top 50 athletes. Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) and Liam Harris (Douglas, County Cork, Ireland) got out well and were the top two Friars throughout the race.

Karamanolis would be the first finisher for the men in 37th place with Harris right behind in 40th.

Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.) was the third Providence finisher in 62nd. The biggest improvement of the day was by Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) After going through the first mile in 136th place, White would continue to move up throughout the race to finish in 71st place.

Peter Rindfuss (Hamburg, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Providence with an 85th place finish.

The team would finish in 12th place with 295 points.

NEXT UP: The Providence women will finish their season at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18. The race will take place at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky.
