Providence Cross Country Sweeps Annual UNH Dual Meet

The Friars began the season with victories over UNH and Holy Cross.

DURHAM, N.H. – The Providence College men’s and women’s Cross Country teams opened up their seasons with wins against the University of New Hampshire and Holy Cross at the UNH Dual Meet on Saturday, Sept. 7. The men won the annual season opener with 19 points while the women scored 17 points to take home the win.

The women made their presence known immediately from the start. Senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), graduate student Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), senior McKenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) and freshman Maria Coffin (Annapolis, MD.) separated themselves from the rest of the field after only the first loop. As the race progressed, the women continued to separate themselves. Ilarda claimed the victory in a time of 16:49, nearly 40 seconds faster than the winning time from last season. Rocha finished second (17:21), followed by Barry in third (17:56) and Coffin in fourth (18:17). Alexandra DeCicco (Holtsville, N.Y.) finished seventh with a time of 18:43 to finish the scoring for the Friars.

The men had a similar start to their race. Providence had six athletes as a part of the lead pack for the majority of the race. Heading into the final loop, a UNH athlete made a surge in an attempt to break away. Sophomore Liam Harris (Douglas, County Cork, Ireland) matched the move and finished hard to take the win in his Providence debut. The Friar men claimed seven of the eight spots to solidify the win.

Providence races next at the Nassaney Invitational in Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday, Sept. 9.
