Providence Cross Country Earns Two Individual Wins At Nassaney Invitational

Seniors Millie Paladino and Tom O’Neill won the women’s and men’s races, respectively.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s Cross Country teams competed at the Nassaney Invitational in Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday, Sept. 9. The Friars had two individual wins on the day as senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va.) won the women’s race and senior Tom O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.) won the men’s race.

The women’s race was highlighted by Providence sweeping the first three spots of the race. Both Paladino and sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) looked sharp in their first race of the season. The duo separated from the chase pack early in the race and continued to build upon the lead throughout. Paladino pulled away late to take the win in a time of 16:58. Wheeler would claim second in 17:28. Senior Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) also had a strong race as she moved through the field to finish third overall. With Coach Treacy resting five of his top eight runners, the women did not have the depth to hold off Brown for the team title.

The Providence men dominated the men’s race. O’Neill and senior Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) took the lead from the start and were never challenged. O’Neill claimed the win in a time of 25:01 while Hanlon took second in 25:08. The Friar men then claimed the third (Austin Scola, 25:34), fifth (Ryan Gallagher, 25:45), sixth (Peter Rindfuss, 25:52), seventh (Angus White, 26:04) and ninth places (Kevin Quinn, 26:11) to seal the win with 17 points.

Providence races next at the Boston College Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. on Friday, Sept. 22. This will be the first time this season Providence races both the full men’s and women’s squads.
