Track’s Shanahan Named BIG EAST Field Athlete Of The Week

The freshman earned the honor after breaking the Providence school record in the javelin.



PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST announced its weekly Athletes of the Week and honor roll for outdoor track & field on Monday, April 23. Providence freshman Chris Shanahan (Westwood, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week for his performance in the javelin at the Providence vs. Brown Dual Meet on April 22. Shanahan won the dual meet with a throw of 60.36m to break the Providence record in the event. The previous record of 59.05 was set in 2009 by Stephen Justus. Shanahan currently ranks first in the BIG EAST and 61st in the East region.



Junior Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) was named to the honor roll for his performance in the 1,500 meters at the dual meet. Carleo ran a personal best time of 3:45.20 to win the meet. He currently ranks fifth in the BIG EAST.



Providence next race will be at the Penn Relays on April 26-28.
