Providence Track’s Millie Paladino Wins BIG EAST 3,000-meter Title

The senior won the title on the second day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships.



STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track & field teams raced on the second day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb, 24. The women’s team finished in sixth place with 40 points while the men finished sixth with 26 points.



WOMEN’S RECAP:

Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) was the premier performer for the Friars on the second day of the championships. Paladino, last year’s mile champion, raced in the 3,000 meters after running a phenomenal 1200-meter leg on the DMR team the night before. Paladino showed her strength by taking control of the race from the start. She left no doubt that she was the class of the field as she ran a time of 9:18.45, winning by a full 12 seconds. Paladino becomes the ninth Friar to win the indoor 3,000-meter title and the sixth woman to have won both the mile and 3,000 meters in BIG EAST history.



The women also had strong running by the women’s 4x800 meter relay. The team featured Alexandra DeCicco (Sachem, N.Y.), Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.), Dana Lowney (Easton, Mass.), and Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.). The team found themselves competing in the chase group with Marquette and DePaul. They would finish fifth in 9:12.52.



The 4x400 meter team of Mariah O’Gara (Taunton, Mass.), Abigail Harrington (Wakefield, Mass.), Olivia Dickinson (South Burlington, Vt.) and DeCicco finished sixth with a time of 4:04.64.



MEN’S RECAP:

The day started for the men with Michael O’Leary (St. James, N.Y.) racing in the final of the men’s mile. With the race being a tactical one, O’Leary took the early lead of the race. The pace began to ratchet up over the second half. The race featured a tight finish as a second separated second from seventh. O’Leary would finish in sixth place with a time of 4:11.97.



The highlight for the men was the 4x800 meter team of O’Leary, Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.), Ryan Jendzejec (Chappaqua, N.Y.) and Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.). The race turned into a back and forth affair between the Friars, Georgetown and Villanova. All three remained bunched together until the final lap of the final leg when Villanova and Georgetown pulled away. The team took home the bronze medal with a time of 7:36.72.



Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) raced in the fast section of the 3,000 meters. Crawley positioned himself in seventh place early on as the pace was hot from the start. He would hold his position for the entire race, running 8:19.75 for seventh.



The 4x400 meter team of Joseph Hurton (Wakefield, Mass.), Jared Grossi (Warwick, R.I.), Daniel Rooney (Rochester, N.Y.) and Doug DeGolyer (Summit, N.J.) finished sixth with a time of 3:25.12.



Michael Bittner (Cranston, R.I.) took fifth place in the high jump with a height of 1.90m.



NEXT UP:

Providence will race the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Boston University in Boston, Mass on March 2-3.
