Providence Track Opens 2018 Campaign at the URI Sorlien Invitational

The Friars had four athletes win their events.

NORTH KINGSTON, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the URI Sorlien Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 20. Providence annually opens up the second semester at the Sorlien Invitational. The Friars shined in the distance events as they had four individual race winners and placed athletes in the top three of seven different events.



RACE HIGHLIGHTS:



-Senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) won the women’s 1,000 meters in dominating fashion. Paladino took the lead from the start and pushed the pace throughout the race to win with a time of 2:51.01, a full seven seconds in front of the second-place finisher.



-Junior Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) led the men’s 1,000 meters wire-to-wire to claim the win with a time of 2:27.39. Junior Michael O’Leary was a step behind in second place with a time of 2:28.08. The duo of Carleo and O’Leary separated themselves from the rest of the field after three laps to take the 1-2 finish.



-Junior Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) took home the victory in the men’s mile. Karamanolis sat in fourth place for the first few laps until a gap opened between first and second. He then moved into second and slowly closed on the leader. Karamanolis took the lead with 400 meters remaining and did not give it up again, taking the win with a time of 4:18.29, two seconds in front of second place.



-Senior Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) won the men’s 3,000 meters in a time of 8:36.88. Senior Thomas O’Neill was the second finisher across the line, taking second with a time of 8:44.67. It was the second year in a row that Hanlon won the 3,000 meters.



-Freshman Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) used a massive surge mid-race to take second in the men’s 800 meters. Carleo ran the majority of the race near the back of the field. With 300 meters remaining, Carleo made his move, surging from the back to challenge for the lead. He would finish with a time of 1:56.89 for second place.



-Freshman Maria Coffin (Anapolos, Md.) finished second in the women’s mile. The eventual race winner took the race out in a blistering pace to separate herself from the field. Coffin found herself as the leader of the chase pack as a result of this. Coffin pushed to close the gap on the leader to finish second with a time of 5:03.69.



-Sophomore Alexandra DeCicco (Sachem, N.Y.) finished second in the women’s 800 meters. DeCicco battled with the eventual race winner for the majority of the race and finished with a time of 2:18.61.



The Friars will compete at the Boston University Terrier Invitational in Boston, Mass. on Jan. 26-27. The women will race on Friday, Jan. 26 while the men will compete on Saturday. Jan. 27.
