BOSTON, MASS. – The Providence College women’s Track and Field team competed at the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Friday, Jan. 26. The women’s performances in the distance races were the highlight of the meet for the Friars.

Senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) competed in the fastest heat of the mile at the Terrier Invitational. Early in the race, she positioned herself in third. At the halfway mark, the two leaders surged and opened a small gap of Paladino, leaving her to run the second half on her own. Paladino would go on to finish third overall and as the top collegiate in the race with a time of 4:39.61. It is the second fastest time in the NCAA to this point in the season.

Graduate student Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) shined in the fastest section of the women’s 3,000 meters. The duo of Rocha and Wheeler positioned themselves perfectly in the lead group, passing through the mile in 4:57. Rocha moved up and challenged for the lead over the final 400 meters, but would come up just short, finishing second overall. Rocha’s time of 9:17.60 was a personal best and was the fastest collegiate time of the day. Wheeler finished close behind Rocha in fifth place and a personal best time of 9:18.60.

Earlier in the day, Alexandra DeCicco (Sachem, N.Y.) ran a time of 2:56.02 in the fastest heat of the 1,000 meters to finish 14th overall.

The Terrier Invitational continues on Saturday, Jan. 27 with the men’s races. The women’s next race will be at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Friday, Feb. 9.
