Providence Track Races At First Day Of Raleigh Relays

The day was highlighted by the women’s performances in the 5,000 meters.



RALEIGH, N.C. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track and field teams opened up the outdoor season at the first day of the Raleigh Relays on Friday, March 30. The night was highlighted by the women’s performances in the seeded sections of the 5,000 meters and the men’s performances in the 1,500 meters.



Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) and Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) raced in the seeded section of the women’s 5,000 meters. The duo positioned themselves in the lead pack and remained a part of it as the group broke away from the rest of the field over the course of the race. The lead group finally broke apart with two laps to go. Rocha and Wheeler both closed well to finish in 15:55.86 and 15:57.18, respectively. It was Rocha and Wheeler’s first time ever breaking the 16-minute barrier.



Providence had three men compete in the seeded heats of the 1,500 meters. Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) ran in the seventh heat and finished with a time of 3:52.67 in his 1,500-meter debut. Michael O’Leary (St. James, N.Y.) followed up Carleo with a big personal best time 3:47.78. Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) raced in the fastest heat of the men’s 1,500 meters. He would finish seventh overall with a time of 3:47.07.



OTHER RESULTS:

- Alexandra DeCicco (Holtsville, N.Y.) ran a time of 4:36.06 in the women’s 1,500 meters

- Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) ran a time of 3:53.07 in the men’s 1,500 meters.

- Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) raced to a time of 3:54.06 in the men’s 1,500 meters.

- Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) ran a time of 17:04.33 in the women’s 5,000 meter.



ON DECK:

The Friars will race on day two of the Raleigh Relays on Saturday, March 31. The team will compete in the men’s 10,000 meters, the men’s 400 meters, the men’s 400m hurdles, the men’s 4x400 meters and the men’s 4x800 meters.
