Track’s Abbey Wheeler Qualifies For Final Round Of NCAA Championships

The sophomore will race the 5,000 meters in Eugene, Ore. On June 6-9.

TAMPA, FLA. – The Providence College track & field team competed on the final day of the first round of the NCAA championships on Saturday, May 26 in Tampa, Fla. The final day was highlighted by the performance of sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) in the 5,000 meters.

Wheeler raced in the second heat of the women’s 5,000 meters, positioning herself on the rail in the top group for the majority of the race. She continually matched the moves made over the course of the race to remain in the top group. Wheeler closed well to take fourth place in her heat with a time of 16:16.73. By finishing top five in her heat, Wheeler automatically qualifies for the final of the 5,000 meters.

Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) also raced in the 5,000 meters, competing in the first heat. Rocha inserted herself with the top group and remained there until a major move was made by the eventual race winner. Rocha would finish ninth in her heat with a time of 16:35.37.

Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) raced in the quarterfinals of the 1,500 meters earlier in the day. Carleo would finish 11th with a time of 3:54.48.

The Final Round of the NCAA Championships will be held in Eugene, Ore. on June 6-9.
