Nationally-Ranked Providence College Cross Country Teams Sweep Bryant Invitational
Sisson, Nagel and Davidson finish 1-2-3 to lead women; Quinn shines in collegiate debut.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The nationally-ranked Providence College men's and women's cross country teams were both victorious at the Bryant Invitational, on the campus of Bryant University, on Saturday, September 10.

On the women’s side, the third-ranked Friars earned the top-three places and landed six within the top nine.  The trio of sophomore Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), classmate Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), and senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) ran together and led the 96-runner field wire to wire. Officially, Sisson was the first to complete the 5-kilometer endeavor, clocking in at 17:09.99, just ahead of Nagel’s 17:10.15 and Davidson’s  17:10.33.

Friar sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia; 18:16.28) followed shortly in fifth-place, ahead of junior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.; 18:22.70) in eighth. Freshman Julie Solimine (Haverill, Mass.; 18:27.41) was ninth.

Despite resting some of their number, including junior All-American Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.), the Friars registered 19 points, 60 notches better than second-place Harvard.

The 18th-ranked Friar men also held some of their number idle, yet still claimed five of the top ten spots after a brisk 5K. Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) stood out in his collegiate debut, leading the Friars with a third-place overall finish. His posting of 15:04.31 was 4.27 seconds shy of the overall winner, Rich Peters of Boston University (15:00.04).

Defending BIG EAST Champion Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) got his first work of the new campaign, placing fourth in 15:11.25.

Providence junior Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.; 15:24.99) earned sixth. Freshman Benjamin Connor (Derby, England; 15:35.09) also fared well in his debut, crossing ninth, just ahead of junior teammate Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand; 15:35.63).

The top five Friars registered a total of 32 points, seven points better than second-place Northeastern.

The Friars are now off until September 30, when both squads compete in the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
