Providence College Women’s Cross Country Victorious at Famed Paul Short Invitational
Friars take four of the top-12 spots; Men place sixth out of 45 teams.



BETHLEHEM, P.A.  – The 3rd-ranked Providence College women’s cross country team outraced 44 other programs to claim victory at the 38th-annual Paul Short Invitational, presented by Brooks. Meanwhile, with some of their number idle this week, the 17th-ranked Providence men still claimed sixth place out of 45 teams.

The last time the Providence women won the prestigious event, hosted by Lehigh University at the Goodman Campus Course, was 1995, the same year they went on to win the NCAA Championship.

This year’s Friars took four of the top 12 spots despite a huge field of 396 runners. Their team score of 101 points was three better than the second-place team, BIG EAST rival and defending national champions, Villanova (104).

Providence was paced by sophomore Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.). The 2010 All-American completed the 6-kilometer endeavor in third place overall. Her time of 20:20 was 10 seconds off the overall winner, Mimi Bogdana of Villanova.

Sisson’s classmate Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) was close behind, clocking in at 20:36 to place sixth overall, just ahead of the ninth-place effort of senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and her crossing of 20:51. Another 2010 All-American, junior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.), was 12th overall in 20:57 to complete the Friars grip at the top of the field.

Sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) rounded out the scoring for PC, checking in at 21:49 at 71st overall.

On the men’s side, the Friars were paced by senior Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), who finished the 8-kilometer course in ninth place out of the massive field of 402 harriers. Running in his second meet of the season, Channon crossed in 24:21, 26 seconds behind the overall winner, Paul Chelimo of UNC Greensboro.

Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) turned in his second strong performance of the season, claiming 14th in 24:40. Classmate Ben Connor (Derby, England) was 53rd in the team scoring and 54th overall, clocking in at 25:14.

Junior Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass,) scored in 78th place (25:24) and freshman Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) rounded out the scoring in 93rd (25:31).

The Friars accounted for 247 points. The University of Oklahoma claimed four of the top seven places to claim the team victory with 34 points.

Both Friar teams next run at the New England Championships. The annual event will be held October 8 at Boston’s Franklin Park.
