Providence College Women’s Cross Country Looks To Qualify For NCAA’s
The women will look to build off a first place finish at the BIG EAST Championships.
Providence, R.I. - The second-ranked Providence College women’s cross country team will travel to Bronx, N.Y. to compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 15. The women’s race will take place at Van Cortlandt Park for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
Seniors Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.) and Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) will be joined by sophomores Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) and Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) and freshman Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) as the seven competitors that will race in New York. Sophomore Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.) will be the team’s alternate runner.
The Friars will take on nationally ranked teams, No. 12 Dartmouth, No. 19 Syracuse, No. 23 Cornell and No. 27 Harvard as well as regionally ranked No. 6 Boston College, No. 7 Columbia, No. 8 Iona, No. 9 New Hampshire and No. 10 Stony Brook.
“At this stage we are looking forward to the last races of the season,” Head Coach Ray Treacy shared. “We are where we need to be at this point in time and are looking forward to positive results and trying to get an automatic qualification for Nationals.”
Last season, the Friars earned a first place finish at the Northeast Regional Championships with 46 points at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Conn. It marked the Friars fifth win in the last ten years at the Northeast Regional Championships.
This season, the Friars are led by Sisson, Collins and Nagel. Sisson ran a course-best time of 19:49 at the BIG EAST Championships to earn the individual title, as the first Friar to do so since 2005 (Fiona Crombie ‘05). Sisson’s first-place finish led the Friars to their first BIG EAST Championship since 2006.
Sisson’s first place finish at the BIG EAST Championships was her third first-place finish of the season and fourth top-finish for the Friars this season. Collins and Nagel join Sisson as the top-three finishers for Providence in each race the trio has competed in. Collins has finished within the top-five in each meet she has raced, while Nagel has posted within the top-nine.
