Providence College Cross Country Jumps To No. 1 In The National Poll

The women claimed the No. 1 spot for the fifth time this season.

New Orleans, La.

- The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams continued their presence in the national rankings that were released Nov. 18. The women jumped a spot to the No. 1 spot, while the men remained in the 21st team in the ranking.

The women claimed a first place ranking with a strong performance at the Northeast Regional Championships. The Friars took the title with three top-seven finishers and five top-20 finishers. Providence was led by senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), who was the top-finisher for the Friars with a second-place finish. Classmates Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) and Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) were among the top-five scorers for Providence. Nagel claimed seventh, while Thek was 20th. Sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) and freshman Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) were also top-five for the Friars with third and 12th place finishes, respectively. Providence took the regional championship with 44 points, 40 points better than the second place finisher Dartmouth (84 points). All five scoring runners claimed All-Northeast Regional honors for their top-25 performances.



The men remain in the 21st position after a fourth place finish at the regional championships (Nov. 15). The Friars were led by junior Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland), who claimed ninth overall as the Friars' top-finisher. Classmates Brian Doyle (Swansea, Mass.) and Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) scored with 12th and 15th place finishes, respectively. Graduate student Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.) and sophomore Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) rounded out the top-five runners for Providence with an 18th place finish and a 38th finish, respectively. The men earned an at large bid to the NCAA Championships on Saturday, Nov. 16 to send them to their 40th team appearance at the Division I NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Both the men and the women will wrap up the 2013 cross country season at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind. at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
