Providence College Women’s Cross Country Named NCAA Division I Scholar Team Of The Year
The Friars were led by five All-Academic individual selections.

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Providence College women’s cross country team was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Scholar Team of the Year on Feb. 14. The Friars were first among 217 women’s programs for the 2013 cross country season.

Providence earned the honor as the highest-finishing team at the National Championship on Nov. 23 after collecting a cumulative grade point average of 3.38. The Friars were led by five individual All-Academic selections to help the program capture its first Scholar Team of the Year honor. The Friars’ five All-Academic selections were tied for the most among Division I women’s programs.

Seniors Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand), Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia), sophomore Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland) and freshman Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) were five of 129 women who were received USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for the 2013 cross country season. Thek led the way with a gpa of 3.77 as a biology major.

All five women scored for the Friars at the National Championship, while Sisson, Nagel and Collins all captured All-America honors for the second consecutive season to lead the Friars to their first NCAA title since 1995. Providence captured the title with 141 points, 56 points less than the second-place finisher.
