Providence College Men’s Indoor Track Begins BIG EAST Championship Competition
Providence finishes 5000 meters with two personal best and three IC4A Championship performances.

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Providence College men’s indoor track and field team began competition at the BIG EAST Championships today (Feb. 21) at the Armory Track in New York City. The Friars posted two personal bests and three IC4A Championship qualifying times in the 5000 meter run.

Junior Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) captured fourth in the 5000 meter run for the Friars. Connor finished the race in a personal best time of 14:13.12. Classmate Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.) followed Connor, crossing the finish line at 14:21.11 good for ninth place. Sophomore Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) was 10th in the race with a personal best time of 14:40.86. All three runners posted IC4A Championship qualifying times.

Providence also earned third in the men’s distance medley with an IC4A Championship qualifying time of 9:47.82. Competing was graduate students Kevin Cooper (Waterford, Ireland) and Julian Saad (Trumbull, Conn.) along with senior Nik Andrews (Clarksburg, Mass.) and sophomore Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.).

The Friars had four runners qualify for the one mile run final, which will take place tomorrow (Feb. 22). Sophomore Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) led the pack with a fifth place finish in a time of 4:13.54, which was the third best time of his respective heat. Classmate Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) was ninth overall and fourth in his heat with a time of 4:14.88. Freshman Jake Feinstein (Sandy Hook, Conn.) qualified with a time of 4:18.24, good for 11th place overall, while classmate Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) was 12th overall with a time of 4:21.64.

Providence saw sophomore Austin King (Kempton, Pa.) qualify in the 400 meter dash with a sixth-place finish overall in a personal best time of 49.32.

The Friars will continue with BIG EAST Championship competition tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Armory Track in New York.
