Patrick Bowler Leads Providence Men's Track In Outdoor Season Opener With Javelin Win
The Friars claimed four of the top six spots in the 1500 meter run.
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Providence College men's track and field team opened the 2014 outdoor season at the Stony Brook University Spring Opener today (March 29). The Friars captured spots third through sixth in the 3000 meter run, with freshman Hugh Armstrong (Balina, County Mayo, Ireland) leading the pack.
Armstrong finished the 3000 meter run third with a time of 8:59.03. He was followed by classmates Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.), who was fourth (9:01.50) and Jake Feinstein (Sandy Hook, Conn.), who crossed fifth (9:02.04). Sophomore Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) was the final Friar of that group to cross as he finished sixth (9:02.42).
Senior Patrick Bowler (Westwood, Mass.) earned the lone win of the day, capturing first in the Javelin with a throw of 52.42m.
The Friars saw junior Phillip Reid (Oceanport, N.J.) capture second in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.03.
Sophomore Joseph Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) also finished second in his respective event, the 1500 meter run. Vercollone crossed the finish line in a time of 4:06.89.
In the 300 meter dash, sophomore Austin King (Kempton, Pa.) claimed fourth with a time of 35.72.
The Friars return to action when the team sends competitors to the Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J. and the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. from April 4-5.
