Providence College Men’s Cross Country Punches Ticket To NCAA’s

The Friars finished second at the NCAA Northeast Regionals.

BRONX, N.Y. - The Providence College men's cross country team qualified for the NCAA Championships with a second-place finish (48 points) at the NCAA Northeast Regional’s on Friday, Nov. 14 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. The men were just 3 points shy of the winners, Syracuse (45 points). The top-two teams in each region earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 22.

Senior Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) was the first Friar to cross the line. Connor placed second in a time of 30:29.12 for the 10km distance and was just three seconds behind the winner, Iona’s Jack Byrne.

Crossing the line after Connor were seniors Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) and Brian Doyle (Swansea, Mass.). Quinn placed fourth in a time of 30:31.12, while Doyle finished fifth (30:33.12).

The fourth and fifth Providence runners were junior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) and senior Liam Hillery (Smithfield, R.I.), respectively. Oakley grabbed 14th-place (30:43.05), while Hillery finished 23rd in a time of 31:00.30.

Connor, Quinn, Doyle, Oakley and Hillery each earned All-Northeast Region honors for finishing among the top-25 individuals in the race.

Rounding out the Friars top-seven were freshman Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) and sophomore Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, Mayo County, Ireland). Hanlon finished the course in a time of 31:17.72 for 36th and Armstrong placed 80th (31:54.13).

“Coming in ranked third, I am proud of how the men’s team ran today,” said head coach Ray Treacy. “Ben, Brian and Shane each had a great race. Julian and Liam also ran well as all five earned All-Northeast Region honors. We are looking forward to the NCAAs as the men’s team has a chance to run one of their best races in a long time.”

The Friars will return to Terre Haute, Ind. next week (Saturday, Nov. 22) for the second-straight year to compete at the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Championships.
