No. 23 Providence College Women’s Cross Country To Compete At NCAA Championships

The women’s race is set to go off at 12:00 p.m. in Terre Haute Ind. on Nov. 22.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's cross country team will conclude the season at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Nov. 22. The Friars are currently ranked 23rd in the nation after a second-place performance at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Nov. 14 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.

Saturday’s race will mark the 24th time over the last 25 years Providence has competed at NCAA’s. All-time, Providence has two NCAA Championship team titles (1995 and 2013), as well as the team’s current volunteer assistant coach, Kim Smith ‘05, winning the individual title in 2004.

Head Coach Ray Treacy will select the competing squad from the following athletes. Sophomore Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) has shown consistency all season long. Rocha finished seventh (20:23.04) at the NCAA Northeast Regionals (Nov. 14) and second (20:40.0) at the BIG EAST Championships (Oct. 31), finishing as the Friars top-runner at both meets.

Along with Rocha, freshman Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) will travel to Terre Haute. Earlier in the season, Lembo earned BIG EAST Athlete of the Week (Sept. 4) for her debut, a second-place performance at the UNH Dual Meet on Aug. 30. She also finished 10th at both BIG EAST’s and NCAA Northeast Regionals.

Junior Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) and freshman Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) also will join Lembo and Rocha. Mullins has finished as the No. 3 Friar all season long, earning All-BIG EAST and All-Northeast accolades along the way.

On Oct. 27, Ilarda was named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week for her performance at the CCSU Mini Meet. She won the 3km race in a time of 9:59.14 on Oct. 24, eight seconds ahead of the winner, helping the team to a first-place finish.

The other juniors that will make the trip include Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.).

Senior Julie Solimine (Haverhill, Mass.) and freshmen Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.) also will travel.

The women’s 6km race is set to go off at 12:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on ncaa.com?<http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule>. For live twitter updates, follow @friarsxctrack.
