Providence’s Julian Oakley and Emily Sisson Highlight Men’s and Women’s Track Performances

Emily Sisson runs sixth fastest time in the 3,000 meters in NCAA history.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s track teams both had standout individual performers this weekend at both the BU Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass. and the Millrose Games in the Bronx, N.Y.

Senior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.) ran a personal best and NCAA No. 2 time of 8:52.60 in the 3,000 meters amongst a stacked field on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Millrose Games in the Bronx, N.Y. She finished fourth in the race as the top American and collegian, defeating the 2014 NCAA Cross Country Champion. Sisson’s time of 8:52.60 marks the sixth fastest 3,000 meter time in NCAA history and the second fastest time ever run at Providence College.

Junior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand) also had a stellar performance this weekend. Oakley finished second in the mile at the BU Invitational in Boston, Mass. in a blazing personal best time of 3:57.22. His 3:57.22 mile currently puts him ranked for third in the NCAA and marks the second time that he has broken the sub-four minute mile barrier.

For the women at the BU Invitational on Friday (Feb. 13), junior Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.) highlighted the evening with a 16 second personal best (9:29.79) in a well ran 3,000 meter race. In the mile, the freshmen duo of Brianna Ilarda (Perth Australia) and Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) came away with personal bests of 4:49.90 and 4:52.73, respectively. All three women also qualified for the ECAC Championships.

Mullins, Ilarda and Lembo weren’t the only ones to record individual bests. Among the others to do so were seniors Caitlin Abelseth (800 meters, 2:14.31) and Caile Kohlbrenner (1,000 meters, 2:56.90), freshman Caitlin Lawlor (1,000 meters, 3:01.63), sophomore Jillian Fanning (Mile, 5:06.63) and freshman Mackenzie Barry (3,000 meters, 9:58.52).

On the men’s side, Shane Quinn finished ninth in the 3,000 meters with a personal best time of 8:00.34. In the mile, Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England), Brian Doyle (Swansea, Mass.), and Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) all qualified for the IC4A Championships after running 4:08.68, 4:09.04 and 4:13.77, respectively. Other Friars that ran personal best times included freshmen Tom O’Hare (400 meters, 52.36), Andrew Doherty (800 meters, 1:58.16), Brian Zied (60 meter hurdles, 8.91).

Both men’s and women’s track teams will be back in action on Feb. 28-Mar. 1 at the Armory in the Bronx, N.Y. for the BIG EAST Championships.
