Providence College Women’s Cross Country Dominates The Northeast Region
The Friars put their top-5 runners in the top-17 to win with 49 points.

Boston, Mass. – The Providence College women’s cross country team won the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship today (Nov. 13) at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The Friars’ finished with their top-5 runners in the top-17 to win the meet with 49 points, 43 points ahead of second-place Syracuse.

One of the Cornell runners attempted to take the race out fast, only to fall back leaving a large pack at the one mile mark, including seniors Sarah Collins (Basel, Switzerland) and Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.), junior Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), and sophomores Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) and Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia).

As the race went on, Collins and six other runners split the pack up, taking the lead around the 3k mark. Mullins, Rocha and Lembo held their positions about 20-meters back, with Ilarda only a few seconds behind.

Coming down from Bear Cage over the last 400-meters, Dartmouth’s Dana Giordana had a sizeable lead, leaving Collins to battle it out for second with Stony Brook’s Christina Melian. Collins held on to come away with second-place in a time of 20:29.0 over the 6km course.

Lembo, Rocha and Mullins came charging through the last section of the course one after the other, finishing ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively. The trio finished with a six second spread (20:54.4, 20:56.9 and 21:00.7).

Providence’s No. 5 runner, Ilarda, came home strong, capturing the 17th-spot (21:11.0) to give the Friars a 49 point win.

Round out Providence’s top-7 were senior Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.) and junior Emily Bushey (Vernon, N.J.). Keating finished 83rd, while Bushey grabbed the 139th-spot.

Each of the top-5 Friars earn All-Northeast Regional honors, after finishing inside the top-25.

“I’m happy to get through and win the meet,” said head coach Ray Treacy. “The women ran really controlled and hopefully this will set us up nicely for next Saturday.”

With the win, Providence earned an automatic spot at the NCAA Championships next week. The meet will be held in Louisville, Ky. on Saturday, Nov. 21.
