Providence Men’s Cross Country Finishes Fifth At Princeton Inter-Regional Meet
Tom O'Neill led the Friars with a fifth-place finish.


Providence, R.I. – The Providence College men’s cross country team finished fifth at the Princeton Inter-Regional Meet in Princeton, N.J. today (Oct. 3). Sophomore Tom O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.) led the Friars with a fifth-place finish overall.

At the 3-mile mark, Providence held third-place as a team with O’Neill sitting comfortably at the front of the lead pack. Also in the lead pack, O’Neill was joined by junior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) and senior Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand), while sophomore Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) and junior Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) were just two-seconds behind.

O’Neill finished strong over the last half of the race, crossing the line as the first Friar (fifth overall) in a time of 24:12.0.

Following O’Neill, Armstrong, Oakley and Crawley all came in one after the other. Armstrong finished the 8km course in a time of 24:26.2 for 22nd-place overall, while Oakley finished 23rd (24:26.3). Crawley crossed the finish just two seconds (24:28.2) after Armstrong and Oakley for the 26th-place spot.

Hanlon finished the race as the fifth Friar across the line and 35th overall (24:34.7) to give the men a total score of 111 points.

Rounding out the Providence top-7 were seniors Christian Costello (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.). Costello grabbed 42nd overall (24:46.0), while Robertson finished 48th(24:50.4).

The Friars will return to action at the New England Championships on Oct. 12 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
