Providence Cross Country Ready For Regionals

The Friars look to qualify for Nationals on Nov. 11.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional meet on Nov. 11. The races will take place at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The women's 6k will start at 11:00 a.m., followed by the men's 10k at noon.

Both teams look to secure a spot at NCAA's with a strong showing at the Regional meet. A team finish in the top two will guarantee a spot at the national meet. If a team finishes outside of the top two, then they will have to wait to receive an At-Large Selection by the NCAA.

The Friars are each traveling with eight runners, with seven racing and the eighth acting as an alternate. The teams will be selected the day of the race. Traveling for the women will be Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.), Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.), Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.), Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W.Va.), and Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.). The men are bringing Julian Oakley (Tauranga, New Zealand), Stephen Robertson (Wakefield, Mass.), Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.), Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland), Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland), Thomas O'Neill (Middletown, N.J.), Nicolas Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) and Michael O'Leary (Melville, N.Y.).

At last year's Notheast Regional meet, the women placed five runners in the top 25 and took home the title with 49 points. Returning from last year's meet will be Collins, Lembo, Mullins and Ilarda, who all earned All-Region Honors with their respective second, ninth, 11th and 24th place finishes.

The men look to rebound from last year's Northeast meet, where they finished in sixth place and missed qualifying for nationals. The men return five of the seven who raced at last year's meet including Oakley, Hanlon, Armstrong, Crawley and Robertson. Both Oakley and Hanlon earned All-Region Honors last season with their 16th and 21st place finishes, respectively.

Historically, the Friars have done well when the Northeast Regional has been at Van Cortlandt Park. The Northeast Regional was last held at Van Cortlandt Park in 2014, when both the men's and women's teams finished second. Oakley finished 14th (30:43.1) and earned All-Region Honors for the men in 2014. For the women, Lembo (10th place), Mullins (24th place), Ilarda (35th place) and Barry (52nd place) all competed to help the women qualify for the National meet.
