Track Ready For BIG EAST Indoor Championships

The Friars will travel to the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. on Feb. 24 and 25.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men’s and women’s Track and Field teams will travel to the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. for the BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 24 and 25th. The Championships will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network. The stream can be accessed via the FoxSportsGo app on a mobile device or tablet. Friar Women To Look Out For

The women will look to the strength of their distance runners to score most of the team points. Junior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) is the top seed in the mile with a time of 4:34.49, which is the third fastest mile in school history and the ninth fastest time in the nation this year. Paladino, along with senior Keelin Hollowood (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), will compete in the preliminary heats of the mile at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 24. The final of the mile will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Feb. 25.



Junior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia) will feature in the 3,000 meters for Providence. Ilarda looks to continue her strong indoor season in which she has set personal bests in the mile (4:43.25), 3,000 meters (9:20.62) and 5,000 meters (15:55.91). Ilarda currently ranks 12th in the nation in the 5,000 meters. Also competing for the Friars will be freshman Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.). Wheeler has had a strong freshman campaign by setting personal bests in the mile (4:51.15) and 3,000 meters (9:29.54). The finals of the 3,000 meters will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Feb. 25.



Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) will lead Providence in the 5,000 meters. Lembo finished fifth in the 3,000 meters at last year’s Championships. The 5,000-meter finals will take place at 2:10 p.m. on Feb. 25.

Women’s 2016 Championship Recap

Last year at the BIG EAST Championships, the women’s team captured a sixth-place finish (46 points). The women had many strong performances, highlighted by second place finishes by Brianna Ilarda (Mile) and Lauren Mullins (5,000 meters). Catarina Rocha also earned a podium finish by finishing third in the 3,000 meters.



Friar Men To Look For

The men’s strength lies in the distance events as well. Sophomores Michael O’Leary (Melville, N.Y.) and Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) will look to lead the Friars in the mile. Both O’Leary and Karamanolis set personal bests in the event this season with O’Leary running 4:12 at the BU Valentine Invitational and Karamanolis running 4:17 at the URI Coaches Invitational. The preliminary heats of the mile will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 24.



Senior Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, R.I.) and junior Thomas O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.) will compete for the Friars in the 3,000 meters. The finals of the 3,000 meters will take place 1:15 p.m. on Feb. 25.



Irishmen Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) and Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) will feature in the 5,000 meters. Armstrong has had a strong season for the Friars as he set personal bests in the mile (4:17.20), 3,000 meters (8:15.34) and 5,000 meters (14:06.43) this season. Hanlon has also raced well, setting a personal best in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:27.01. The finals of the 5,000 meters will take place at 2:10 p.m. on Feb. 24.

Men’s 2016 Championship Recap

The men’s track team earned a sixth place finish at the 2016 BIG EAST Indoor Championships with 54 points. Julian Oakley provided three solid performances for the Friars over the course of the weekend. Oakley finished second in the mile and was a member of the Distance Medley and the 4x800 meter relays that each finished third.  Jordan Mann also raced well for the Friars, finishing third in the 3,000 meters and running a leg of the Distance Medley Relay.
