Armstrong, Wheeler Lead Friars on Day Two of IC4A/ECAC Championships




BOSTON, MASS- The Providence College men’s and women’s Track teams competed at the IC4A/ECAC Championships at Boston University on March 5. The Friars had athletes competing in the women’s 1,000-meter finals as well as the men’s and women’s 3,000-meter finals.



Senior Hugh Armstrong (Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland) highlighted the second day of competition for Providence. Competing in the fast section of the 3,000 meters, Armstrong raced to a lifetime best time of 8:09.22 for fourth place.  This was a six second personal best time for Armstrong and was the first time he had broke the 8:10 barrier.



Senior Trevor Crawley (Cumberland, Maine), junior Thomas O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.) and junior Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) raced in the first heat of the 3,000 meters. Crawley won the heat in a time of 8:16.75. O’Neill followed closely behind to take second place in a time of 8:17.24. Both Crawley and O’Neill’ times were personal bests. Hanlon finished fifth with a time of 8:24.90.



Both freshman Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.) and junior Katie Lembo (Penfield, N.Y.) raced in the fast section of the women’s 3,000 meters. Wheeler took fifth place with a time of 9:36.39 while Lembo finished seventh with a time of 9:37.72.



Freshman Alexandra DeCicco (Holtsville, N.Y.), racing in the finals of the 1,000 meters, finished eighth with a time of 2:54.65.



Providence next races at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 10-11. The Championships are being hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas.
