PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete against a strong field at the Battle-in-Beantown Invitational on Friday, Sept. 22. The Friars will line up against multiple nationally and regionally ranked teams in the Boston College hosted race at Franklin Park. The invitational will include three races. The featured women’s 5k will start at 3:00 p.m., followed directly by the featured men’s 8k at 3:30. The meet will conclude with an open mixed 5k at 4:15 p.m.

Both featured races will stand as tests for the Friars as they will mark the first time this season that Providence has raced its top squad. At both the UNH Dual Meet and the Nassaney Invitational, Coach Ray Treacy held out individuals for training purposes.

The women enter the meet with an experienced team as five of the women racing in the featured race have competed at a NCAA Championship and three have achieved All-American status. Leading the way will be the trio of graduate student Catarina Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Australia), and senior Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.). Rocha, a two-time Cross Country All-American, has had tremendous success in her three previous times racing at the Beantown having finished seventh in 2013, 13th in 2014 and third in 2015. Ilarda has also had strong showings having finished 12th in 2015 and fourth in 2016. Paladino, in her first time racing in the meet, finished fifth in 2016, less than a second behind Ilarda.

Completing the team for the women will be senior Mackenzie Barry (Mendham, N.J.), sophomore Abbey Wheeler (Pine City, N.Y.), freshman Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) and freshman Hannah Bennison (Vernon, British Columbia). This will be Bennison’s Friar debut.

The men’s team will look to seniors Tom O’Neill (Middletown, N.J.), Aaron Hanlon (Drogheda, Ireland) and sophomore Liam Harris (Douglas, County Cork, Ireland) to lead the team. O’Neill and Hanlon opened up their seasons at the Nassaney Invitational, where they claimed the top two spots at the race. Harris was the top Friar at the UNH Dual meet, which he won by five seconds.

Filling out the team will be juniors Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.), Michael O’Leary (St. James, N.Y.), Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand), Austin Scola (Medfield, Mass.), sophomore Peter Rindfuss (Hamburg N.Y.) and freshman David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.).
